The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will shutdown the Delaware Aqueduct from October 2024 through May 2025.  This shutdown is to address significant leaks in the Delaware Aqueduct by completing a bypass tunnel under the Hudson River and re-routing water away from the leaking sections of the Delaware Aqueduct.

 

The Town of Newburgh currently obtains water from the New York City (NYC) Delaware Aqueduct and the Chadwick Lake Reservoir.  During the NYC Delaware Aqueduct shutdown, the Aqueduct will be offline and the Town will not be able to obtain water from it.

 

To ensure adequate water supply to Town of Newburgh Water District Users, the Town will continue to utilize water from the Chadwick Lake Reservoir and obtain water from the Town of New Windsor, as a secondary water source as needed.

 

Some homes with residential ground water wells in the Roseton area of the Town will be impacted by the Delaware Aqueduct shutdown.  To mitigate this impact, the Town will begin work in October 2024 to extend the municipal water service to impacted residents and the NYC DEP will provide water to these residents until the extension of the Town’s municipal water service is complete.  This project should be completed in six months.

 

No disruption in water supply is anticipated for current Town of Newburgh water district users.
